Elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification for advanced nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate after PN/A pretreatment

چکیده

Elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (S0dAD) was applied in a packed-bed reactor to remove residual nitrogen from raw mature landfill leachate after partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) (PN/A) pretreatment. The performance stability of S0dAD were evaluated with different NOx? (nitrate nitrite) loadings hydraulic retention time (HRT) at 15–28 °C over an operational period 240 days. Stable high removal efficiency (NRE) 96.6 ± 1.9% determined under stepwise decrease HRT (from 9 h 2 h), resulting low total concentrations 24.0 3.9 mg-N/L the effluent. circumneutral pH, associated efficient elemental sulfur supply, facilitated maintain NRE S0dAD, which contributed 86.3% reactor. Biomass highly enriched sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) (58.4%), including predominant genus Thiobacillus (47.7%) two less-abundant genera Sulfurimonas (4.5%) Sulfurovum (5.5%). This study highlights potential implementation coupled PN/A process for advanced carbon-deficient ammonium-laden wastewater, particularly leachate.

Nitrogen Removal from Landfill Leachate by Microalgae

Landfill leachates result from the degradation of solid residues in sanitary landfills, thus presenting a high variability in terms of composition. Normally, these effluents are characterized by high ammoniacal-nitrogen (N-NH₄⁺) concentrations, high chemical oxygen demands and low phosphorus concentrations. The development of effective treatment strategies becomes difficult, posing a serious pr...

Pretreatment of ammonium removal from landfill leachate by chemical precipitation.

Chemical precipitation is a useful technology to remove ammonium (NH(4)(+)) from landfill leachate. In this paper, the removal of ammonium from landfill leachate was studied. The objective of this study was to investigate optimum pH, optimum molar ratio, and different kinds of chemicals combinations for magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation. Furthermore, the kinetics of MAP formation...

Nitrogen Removal from Landfill Leachate via the Nitrite Route

The feasibility of removing nitrogen from mature landfill leachate using the nitrite route was investigated in a two-stage SBR system – (1 first stage, short-cut nitrification; second stage, denitrification via nitrite. With a volumetric exchange rate (n) of 0.3 d and an oxygen concentration of between 1.2 and 1.3 mg/L, the nitrite accumulation ratio – (NO2-N)×100/(NOx-N)% – was between 32% and...

Sulfur-based Autotrophic Denitrification

Sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification processes utilize autotrophic denitrifiers, such as Thiobacillus denitrificans and Thiomicrospira denitrificans, to reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas. Bench-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification process. This paper addresses three issues: (1) start-up and operation of a CSTR to provide an adequate seed sou...

Efficient Utilization of Waste Carbon Source for Advanced Nitrogen Removal of Landfill Leachate

A modified single sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was developed to remove the nitrogen of the real landfill leachate in this study. To take the full advantage of the SBR, stir phase was added before and after aeration, respectively. The new mechanism in this experiment could improve the removal of nitrogen efficiently by the utilization of carbon source in the raw leachate. This experiment adopt...
